The latest technology and products suitable for dyslexic students
Sharon Goldie on the latest technology and products for students with dyslexia
Sharon Goldie recently delivered a one day seminar and information exchange on the latest technology and products for students with dyslexia. Designed for secondary school sencos, the seminar provided an opportunity to see the latest assistive technology developments demonstrated, identify the most popular software for the Senco’s ‘toolkit’ as well as an in depth focus on Mindmapping and its different uses across the curriculum.
Sharon’s focus was on ‘matching technology to need’ and demonstrated this through the use of four case studies. All four students were of secondary school age and dyslexic but with very different profiles. Sharon explained what should be considered when selecting the most appropriate mindmapping software for each individual and how to determine whether or not an individual is a suitable candidate for voice recognition software. She also demonstrated how the same software could quickly be customised to address individual needs.
As each delegate was given a free copy of ‘MindGenius’ software, Sharon was keen for them to be confident in using it in school. Therefore the afternoon activity was centred around ‘getting started’ with the software with the help of the visual software guide provided.
The seminar was a great success with all delegates saying how much they had enjoyed it and how informative they found it.
These are just a few of the comments from the delegates who attended:
“I liked the way products were presented as solving issues for individual students needs and their learning styles.”
“a good clear presentation covering many aspects and problems associated with dyslexia”
“very informative seminar”
“good clear demonstrations of software”
“really enjoyed the day”
